Latest School Project: What I Learned

A worthwhile experience where I got to make a working game with others and learned new skills.

Since the beginning of September, I have been involved to help create a game for my Intro to Computer Games Class. This was a 14 Week Process of coming together, creating a story, assets, music and sound effects, turn based combat, and exploration gameplay elements blended into a prototype which can have a lot of potential. This prototype is Redneck Redemption: Battle for the Minifigure.

For summary, this game involves you: the Player, trying to win back your beloved minifigure after it was stolen by the annoying neighbor. As the Player, your goal is to explore the neighborhood, meet companions who will help you in battles, and defeat the annoying neighbor. This game has elements of open world exploration, where the Player is able to talk to as many or as few people as they like, and fight with the variety of moves or companions they have gained. It allows flexibility and challenge, with a dramatic twist when you beat the annoying neighbor.

(Example of the Turn Based Combat, where you are able to transform into a Shark if you interacted with the Shark.)

My role for this project was Music and Sound Effects Designer, where I composed and created Music and SFX for the various scenes, interactions, and actions the Player could take. While that was my designated role, I did develop the User Interface for the Main Menu, Options, and Credits, as well as assisted in the Turn Based Combat development.

I think it is incredible to see how ideas on a paper or document can turn into an incredible piece of work. Not only is this an amazing effort that I am proud of, but it leaves so much room for expansion and new ideas if we continued working on it.

This was my first time working with a team, which is different from working by myself because you have so many more people and ideas and higher potential to reach those ideas, so there is more power with people. If you ever want to try out the project, you can try it over here:
